Living his dream By Jacob Page Joshua Guillemot-Rodgerson may be in his summer holidays but is looking forward to getting back to famed dance school, Juilliard, just so he can get back in the studio and “relax”. The 19-year-old, who perfected his skills with the Marlborough Dance Centre before heading overseas, is two years into a four year journey at Juilliard but will return to where it all began for a double bill of Peter Pan and Paquita Grande Pas Classique at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre from August 14 to 16. Joshua returns to where it all began Continued from page 1 Joshua says he has kept busy by running a series of workshops around New Zealand as he looks to fund the $32,000 he needs for year three at Juilliard, but is excited about spending a few weeks in Blenheim next month. “I know it’s meant to be a summer break, but I’m still pretty busy… There’s a lot of preparation that goes into all this so in some ways it will be nice to get back to New York and continue learning and just dancing. “It’s really exciting to be coming back to Blenheim which is where I learnt to dance really. “It will be great to be able to perform in Blenheim, it’s a familiar audience and the town has been really good to me.” Joshua says he has enjoyed learning about choreography while at Juilliard and it has offered him another potential career path.
“I always thought I would just dance and then look at creative avenues like write a novel but I’ve really enjoyed choreography which I wasn’t entirely expecting.” Joshua says he has learned to accept the expectation that comes with being a student from the famed school. “People do have expectations when you say what school you’re from…I’ve never
been so nervous like I was before my first Juilliard production and I hopefully never will be again.” Joshua says he was looking forward to performing a double bill in Blenheim. “Paquita is very classical while Peter Pan is more contemporary…He has a bit more attitude and I like playing characters like that.”

Pa Kids celebrate Maori Language Week By Adam Poulopoulos Children from the Pa Kids programme at Omaka Marae met at Countdown Springlands this week, all in the name of Maori language. Sixteen children were joined by nine family members to move around the supermarket in groups labelling items with their Maori name. The initiative took place to mark Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori, or Maori Language Week. Parent and event coordinator Tineka Smith says the event helps make children more familiar with
the Maori language. “For us it’s about nurturing our tamariki (children) to be able to think in both languages, and to normalise Te Reo Maori, whether it be at school or at places like the supermarket. “The people at Countdown are quite excited. They’re hoping people leave the labels up for the rest of the week.” The children were split into four groups and given 20 items to find each. Pa Kids meets every Wednesday night during the school term.

Skate park ‘unfairly targeted’ By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Bec Moorhouse has hit back at claims that children are unsafe while using the park, saying it’s all been “blown out of proportion”. She also believes the negative publicity is one of the reasons why families choose not to use the park. Last month Bec publicly announced she would tackle the ‘skate park stigma’, by launching regular public events, including the recent Blenheim Skate Jam and fortnightly supervised evenings. A Facebook was also created titled Scoot, Skate & Ride Marlborough, a forum for adults, youths and children to upload their videos, photos and safely trade parts. She says she has spoken with Blenheim Police on the claims, as well as park users, and has been assured that there have not been serious incidents as reported in the media. “Police are monitoring the Blenheim Skate Park with video surveillance and patrols daily, and have told me they are not aware of drug deals, violence or other unlawful acts taking place.

“I think the wrong information has been put out to the public and is feeding this stigma that has been created. “It really annoys me because I have been working hard to create these supervised events to entice parents to bring their kids down and help change the stigma of the place. “My son has been a regular user of the park for three years and he hasn’t seen or told me of any drug deals or bullying. “The occasional cigarette smok-
ing maybe, but no drugs,” she says. Bec has spoken to several parents since launching the public skate events and says all the feedback has been positive. “One mother says since the first public event she has brought her children most weekends and hasn’t had any issues. “She also mentioned she had encouraged other people to take their kids down who initially were put off, but are now happy to go there. “If there have been any incidents
they haven’t been significant enough to have been noticed,” she says. Originally planned for Friday evenings, the supervised events will now be on Sundays so more younger children can attend. Future plan for MBC up for discussion By Jacob Page Marlborough Boys’ College principal Wayne Hegarty says the time is right for the school to start forging its own path with the community. The principal and the board of trustees will hold a public ‘Annual Review & Future Planning Evening’ at the school hall on Tuesday night to inform people of the school’s future plans as well as seeking out public input into the makeup of that future. The meeting will not be about any future site of MBC with

the issue from the Ministry of Education. “It’s a board that have become increasingly involved in strategic planning over the last 18 months. “It’s the right place and the right time. “When I first arrived, a lot of the direction was set by ERO (Education Review Office)…We were on regular one year review with ERO. “Their recommendations became our planning. “So five years in we’ve seen some pretty dramatic improvement in a lot of areas so this is a
chance to take stock, look at where we have come from and where we would like to go.” Wayne says it’s an opportunity for the public to get an idea of what plans are in place and contribute to shaping the school as a whole. The meeting will begin at 7pm on Tuesday in the MBC hall. While there has been no word from the Ministry of Education on the future location of secondary schooling in Marlborough, Wayne says they continue to invest money in current infrastructure when it comes to health and safety.
Former Marlborough Boys’ College head boy PJ Lupi will continue his rehabilitation closer to family after flying home from Phuket. PJ was involved in a serious scooter accident on July 6 which left him in a coma. His family will now decide the best course of action in his recovery.
Rockquest success Queen Charlotte College student Aidan Quinn-Brereton has been named one of the 10 best solo and duo acts nationally in the Smokefree Rockquest. The judges will announce today which of the 10 solo and duo acts make the grand final. Just six bands and three solo and duo acts would be chosen to perform in the final concert at Epsom Girls Grammar in Auckland on September 11.
Jazz festival The South Island’s best jazz bands gather in Blenheim for another year next month. The Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival is being held across the Marlborough district from August 5-8. Public performances will be held before the gala concert on the evening of August 8.

Savvy siblings set up store By Adam Poulopoulos Once upon a time, sisters Jacqui Taggart and Cheryl Clark had very different jobs, but now, their mutual love for clothes and craft has brought them together. Jacqui and Cheryl started their clothes store ‘She’s my Sister,’ on Selmes Road, on May 1. The Blenheim-born pair sell ‘upcycled’ clothing and crafts. They stock their own goods under the ‘She’s my Sister’ brand as well as other local products. The store features a lot of oneoff products, and the pair pride themselves on a lack of wastage – the leftover fabric used to make each is also stocked. In their past lives Cheryl worked as a graphic designer and Jacqui as a travel agent. Jacqui says she had a love for
craft and furniture and Cheryl for clothing, and the decision to open was not hastily made. “We’d had the idea in mind for about the last five years, and Cheryl and I had seriously discussed it for the last two. “They (interests) just came together…the opportunity was there and the time felt right.” She says upcycled goods are trendy in Marlborough, and the interest from others had helped the store gather momentum. Cheryl says their location, on the old Selmes Road Garden Centre site, had also helped. “People still turn up looking for the garden centre, so it is quite an iconic spot.” Cheryl says with the interest shown by locals and the talent in the Marlborough region, the

That elusive chocolate milk By Jacob Page A date has now been set for the South Island launch of Lewis Road Creamery Fresh Chocolate Milk, which looks set to include Marlborough. Scot is new citizen After moving to New Zealand in 1999, Scots aircraft engineer John Clark has become one of Marlborough’s newest citizens. Wearing the Ancient McDonald tartan of his family, Mr Clark affirmed his new status in a ceremony conducted by Mayor Alistair Sowman. Citizenship ceremonies are held regularly at the Council chambers with up to 30 people declaring their allegiance to this country and getting a formal welcome to our Marlborough community. Candidates are able to invite family and friends to attend the ceremony to witness the change of citizenship – from the country of birth to the country of choice. The majority of Marlborough’s new citizens come from Britain but
increasingly our region is becoming the new home to a diverse range of nationalities. At this month’s ceremony, our newest citizens came from Britain, Brazil, Samoa, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The Sun Who’s paying? A culvert had been placed under the road up St Highway 63 just past Renwick the last few weeks holding up traffic and that’s a bit of a pain. Fair enough, but only a week after that asphalt was put down and I see that it’s already stuffed & patches need doing! Whose paying for that mess to be fixed? Marlborough roads had better not charge us tax & rate payers to do this fix up over a fix up!

Dear Ed, It does feel like I’m banging my head against a brick wall, but here goes. In simple terms on the 6 February 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed by Maori chiefs from parts of New Zealand on behalf of their iwi, in good faith that they were on equal terms with the crown. Unfortunately this was not the case, the result was the colonisation of New Zealand, whereby Maori culture was suppressed. There was a long period of time when it was forbidden for Maori children to speak their native language at school. This is one of many injustices. So, when people talk about being “equal” by bringing two cultures together making them one, assimilation is inevitable, which makes for a culturally intolerant New Zealand. The effect still felt strongly today. In recent times the New Zealand government have been trying to right the wrongs of the past for Maori, hence land settlements etc. Although there have been some positive changes for Maori, unfortunately, statistically Maori still fall short in some areas, health being one. I appreciate that this may be hard to stomach for some people who simply don’t care or can’t comprehend the implications of the past and it’s present effect on Maori. Some things may appear unjust or racist as a couple of you have pointed out, but as I have mentioned before, if you genuinely care about being a “Kiwi” do some research, dig a little deeper, you may learn something, or not. Dear Ed, My father passed away recently and we held a garage sale as a general clear up, imagine my delight as I spied across the driveway a representative from Bayleys Real Estate handing my newly widowed mother a card and asking if she was selling the property! Are these the depths that Real Estate agents have sunk to now? The equivalent of ambulance chasing but instead of injured persons they seek out the bereaved and vulnerable in their desperate attempt to get a leap on the market? I am disgusted by this person’s behaviour and treatment of my mother and will ensure I never use Bayleys for anything in the future other than somewhere to spit as I pass their offices. Jon Todd

Find a bin... On the route we walk our dog there is a bin at the start of the walk and thats it. The council need to provide more bins. If they are there people will use them.

Springlands School puts environment first By Jacob Page Springlands School has instigated its own review of its Green-Gold Enviro School status yesterday as it looks to improve on its environmental initiatives. A group of students took the examiner on an eco-race similar to the format of ‘The Amazing Race’ and illustrated some the environmental and cultural achievements. The students went to their orchard, their mud hut, their fish pond as well as cultural sites. The school began the initiative five years ago and is one of only two schools in Marlborough with the top honour. Teacher in charge Cathee Wilks says Springlands School took their enviroschool duties very seriously. “We wanted the review so we could ensure that we were still meeting all the standards. “It’s a chance for us to celebrate what we have accomplished so far and ask ourselves are we still a green-gold school and what areas do we need to work on. “It’s quite an honour to be an enviroschool and it’s an integral part of who
we are and what we teach here.” Cathee says it’s important the kids have a voice and gain confidence to make the most of the project. “From our last review one of our goals was Maori perspective and we felt that was an area in the school that we could work on so now we have a very strong Kapa Haka group. “To have someone here looking at what we are doing is quite a big thing for the school but we want the kids to take the lead and that’s what we are seeing.

After working in the graphic design and print industry from the age of 17, Liz found herself in a position where her employer was closing down the business. She had the option of looking for work elsewhere, or realising her long term goal of starting her own graphic design business. It was perfect timing for her as she had her young daughter at home and was looking for flexibility. Liz negotiated with her former employer to keep the files so it was a smooth transition for clients, and went about setting up Valk Designs. Renwick are being discussed by the town’s Smart and Connected group. Jamie says the parks are useful in several ways. “They’re obviously a great place to take dogs but also a great place to socialise, and for dog owners to meet other dog owners. “It’s also about tourists
– people want enclosed places to be able to stop and run their dogs at. “It’s another facility which would make Marlborough a better place to visit.” He says each site needs low-cut grass, a water supply, a doggy-doo station and basic carparking facilities to make it successful. He says council are open to feedback on the proposals. While Renwick has a committee in place but not full agreement on the site, Blenheim has a site but no input from the community yet. Speech study a chance for clarity By Jacob Page A Blenheim speech and language therapist is urging Blenheim parents to sign up for a University of Canterbury study looking at speech development. The project called KidsWords is hoping to have a sample size of 3000 children aged between 16 and 30 months old to see how children in New Zealand learn and develop their speech. Rachel Patrick from Jibber Jabber Speech Therapy says the study should give a good
insight into the issue. “This is really exciting as there is not a lot of New Zealand-based research available, so it will be good to be able to use in the future instead of relying on Australian or American. “It will be great to have some date on what ages Kiwi kids develop and if there are many differences compared to other countries. Jamie Arbuckle says proposals for dog parks in Blenheim, Picton and Renwick are at different stages. A piece of land has been put aside on Taylor Pass Road for the Blenheim park, while a corner of the sports field in Renwick has been proposed for its park. The Blenheim and Picton plans will be discussed at an Animal Control SubCommittee meeting next month, while plans for

‘Shakeout’ earthquake prep urged More than 500,000 New Zealanders have signed up to take part in New Zealand ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill at 9.15am on 15 October, says Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye. “This is a great start. Our goal is to have at least 1.5 million people signed up for the drill, so 11 weeks out we’re a third of the way there,” Kaye says. “During the drill, New Zealanders will drop, cover and hold to practise the right actions to take during an earthquake. “I encourage everyone to sign up for ShakeOut. We want as many people as possible taking part, from individuals and families to schools, shops, businesses and other organisations. “ShakeOuts are held in other countries, including the US, Canada and Japan, but our previous drill in New Zealand in 2012 had the largest participation rate of any ShakeOut anywhere. “We want to show once again that we’re world leaders in earthquake drills, to improve our preparedness as a nation. “New Zealand is prone to earthquakes, so we all need to take responsibility and know how to get through. “By signing up on the ShakeOut website, you can get information on the right actions to take before, during and after an earthquake. Renata joins Makos The Tasman Makos have continued their recruitment drive ahead of the upcoming ITM Cup season with the signing of Trent Renata. Renata, 27, can play both fullback and firstfive-eighth, and has been signed from Otago. He played for the champion Highlanders in this year’s Super 15, and he joins a sizable Highlanders
contingent at the Makos, including Shane Christie, Joe Wheeler, Alex Ainley, Ross Geldenhuys, Marty Banks and Kane Hames. Before moving south last year Renata played for Waikato, debuting in 2008. He played 66 games for the Mooloos, scoring 444 points. He is a former New Zealand Under 20 and New Zealand Maori representative.
Jack will be busy at awards Marlborough’s Jack Glover will be one of 13 judges to taste more than 1300 wines at the New World Wine Awards next week. The independent judging panel of 13 wine experts will be required to blind-taste up to 120 wines each per day over three days from August 3 to August 5. Chair of judges Jim Harré attributes this sustained growth to winemakers’ confidence in the integrity of the process, with wines judged using the same internationally-recognised points system as all other leading wine awards, and the benefits of these awards over others in terms of distribution and promotion of medal-winning wines. Also contributing to driving up the number of entries this year was a change to the minimum number of bottles available for sale to be eligible to enter, down from 6000 to 5000. There are further reductions to the minimum stockholding for lesser-known varietals such as some aromatics and dessert wines, which are typically made in smaller
quantities. “This gives consumers nationwide the chance to get to know some of the lesserknown varietals by trying medal-winning wines that have been judged by an independent panel of expert wine judges,” Harré says. “More and more people are choosing to buy their wine at the supermarket at the same time as they stop and get what they need for dinner, so the New World Wine Awards takes the guess work out of choosing award winning wines at a great price,” Harré says. The independent panel of wine experts will judge the wines entered in the awards from August 3-5 at Te Papa Museum in Wellington, scoring each wine according to the internationally recognised 20-point system. The judges will award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, with the best wines in each category re-tasted to determine the champion wine of each varietal, plus the overall champion red and champion white.

Some sporting organisations ban fans for similar actions. Goodes has taken a different approach. Whether other athletes will follow his lead remains to be seen.

No signs of slowing down Marlborough’s John Kennard, Hayden Paddon’s co-driver since 2005, will mark two significant achievements when the pair of New Zealanders line-up for Rally Finland overnight. It’s 30 years since Kennard’s first World Rally Championship event as a co-driver and it’s his 50th WRC start. Kennard says he started out in club and national events as a driver. He describes the opportunity to co-drive in the 1985 WRC Rally Finland as being thrown in the deep end. “I met Brent and Shirley Rawstron back in 1984 when I was helping the organisers of Mainfreight Rally New Zealand and when the Rawstrons wanted to ship their own car to Europe to contest a number of events – having got the taste of some classic European rallies in a leased car – I went along with them to do the organising and another guy, Roger, was codriving. However when Roger became struck by a bout of lovesickness not long before Brent was due to do the 1000 Lakes Rally, Brent said “why don’t you come and do it with me”? With the assistance of some copied pace notes and the relative luxury of open reconnaissance of the rally route for at least two weeks, Kennard assisted Rawstron, complete the 1985 1000 Lakes Rally as the top nonScandinavian privateers which won them some serious prize money. “WRC events in those days were enormous,” Kennard recalls. “Every stage was different and there were 45 or 47 of them, spread out geographically and hugely long days. Racism problem How has it come to this? Sydney Swans AFL champion Adam Goodes is considering leaving the game, citing relentless booing with racial overtones as the cause. The 35-year-old veteran has been granted leave by the Sydney Swans, and will miss this weekend’s crucial clash with Adelaide. Goodes is a dual Brownlow Medal best-and-fairest winner, a four-time All-Australian and last year’s Australian of the Year. The problem really came to a head in 2013 when a 13-year-old Collingwood spectator called Goodes an ape. Goodes made an example of her, demanding an apology. “Racism has a face – it’s a 13-year-old girl,” Goodes said.
